I still remember the moment I heard Guararé for the first time. And it wasn’t the album version. It was the live version.
On the album, “Live in New York”
I was stunned. What an arrangment. I thought: I want to arrange like that! Gil Lopez gets all the credits for that, since he is the arranger of that tune. Amazing, Gil.
It was until much later that I found out that this is actually a cover. The original tune is called: El Guararey de Pastora and is written by Juan Formell, performed by Los Van Van.
This doesn’t change how I feel about the arrangement but please check out the original songo of Los Van Van.
